In 1739, the first large-scale migration of Highland Scots arrived in the Lower Cape Fear. That same year, Wilmington was born. Since its beginning, the port city has welcomed immigrants from all over Scotland. Many of them remained in Wilmington as merchants and professionals in the colonial era and later into the 19th century, while hundreds more made their way inland to the Piedmont to set up farms and plantations.
